Two years ago a woman killed herself in a Food Stamp office in Texas along with her two children. My friend who is a single mother is trying to get foodstamps and the State of Texas has been denying her for "state reasons" even though she qualifies going by Federal Guidelines. The USDA has left it up to the states to Administer the Food Stamp program but these southern states are being very lowdown and tricky with people who qualify and are denying people on arbitrary reasons. She was approved for stamps initially. Her husband left her and she is struggling. Yet a letter from Texas was returned because her apartment number wasn't on it so Texas sanctioned her and then denied her. She had the sanctions removed but the state is now telling her to "Go To Food Banks" even though again she qualifies for foodstamps going off of her income. Apparently she had left off her apartment number on her application but it clearly showed on the lease. She has gone to food banks and can't go back for another month. Her and her kids are going hungry. The Ombudsman office in Austin and the 211 representatives were all hostile with her and very combative. This is what drives people to kill themselves people. When you have ideologues in office who hate these social programs and who do everything they can to drop people from the rolls. Manager Victor at 211 told her it was a "state program" using "state dollars" and the state and not the federal government decided who could apply and be approved. Not sure this info was accurate. Texas is especially hateful to the poor. Shame on them.
