Definitely don't take the 1 star reviews with a grain of salt. I personally didn't experience any discrimination but I believe the other reviewers saying they did because the women running this place are pretty awful to interact with. They want you and every member of your household to meet the dog 5+ times on separate occasions before they give it to you. I wasn't even the one adopting a dog but I had to come to this place because my family member is trying to adopt. They want the dog to be ready to jump into your arms and leave with you. That is just not the reality of a lot of dogs, especially in a shelter environment, they are going to be naturally defensive and timid. So these women are just wasting peoples time based off natural normal reactions the dog is having. If the family seems nice and trustworthy and is ready to commit to a dog, give them the damn dog. One of the ladies even mentioned that her coworker Gretchen is hesitant to EVER let people adopt a dog and leave with it. Sounds like Gretchen shouldn't be working here. Overall it just felt like a bunch of women who don't really know much about animals are making emotional decisions about who should be able to have one as a pet just based off their own personal judgments, not what would be suitable for the animal.

This shelter is honestly amazing! Gretchen was kind enough to show us around and tailor our experience to which dogs would be the best fit for our family. As a family with a toddler and cats, it's good to have an insight before hand instead of falling for a dog whose temperament doesn't go with our home. The play area for the dogs is large and they get out three times a day. I will definitely be back ❤️

Came in today intending to see a few pups we’ve been looking at for a few weeks. We immediately were questioned about possible move out in the future(as if we can tell the future) and a bunch of random question. Felt immediately discriminated against when we brought up having a pit lab at home. As soon as she heard that we got stories about “not good situations and bad outcomes” of small and large dogs living together. Our pit has always been around small dogs her whole life, it wouldn’t be an issue but they said just with that we would most likely be denied. We tried to at least see the dogs and she said it would be a waste of time because they’ll deny us most likely.
Making the process to even see the dogs shouldn’t be that hard. It’s a private adoption center so they have weird rules and we wanted nothing to do with them. Don’t waste your time here. No compassion, nothing but judgement. No big and small dogs would be allowed, what a waste of keeping those dogs there instead of a loving home!

This place will find any little reason you them not to let a dog go home with you that you want. You can be the perfect applicant but they will still deny you. Oh and by the way they think they are doctors because they think that they can determine whether a dog can fit your ESA needs.

This is a wonderful No Kill shelter, if they haven't got the space they can't accept the animal. I was very lucky there were kitties that had found homes so they made room for the 4 kittens that were dumped in a park behind my house that were not feral they were sweet and able to be picked up and snuggled. I wish I could have kept them but I barely get by on a fixed income.
SBACC is a Non Profit that relies on donations and many wonderful volunteers who you can see takes awesome care of these animals including nursing them back to health.

The shelter is clean and staffed with passionate and dedicated volunteers. The adoption form is long but given the amount of care and time a furry friend takes during their lifetime, not unwarranted. This is my second adoption from SBACC, the first kitty, Chloe, was adopted in 2003 and passed at the end of 2020. Our new kitten, Jaeger, is a charmer and we are so pleased to have found him! SBACC was upfront about the health needs of all of the kittens we considered, something we greatly appreciated. All of the adoptable animals have been sprayed or neutered, which is wonderful.
Yes, the staff can appear to be reluctant to allow an adoption but given the amount of 'found' animals that end up back at SBACC as older lost, returned, or abandoned pets, their adoption review process is necessary. While we were considering which kitten to adopt, there were three older cats that had started at SBACC and come back years later due to 'circumstances'. Poor kitties. Pets are a lifetime commitment, their lifetime.
The only thing I would like to see is for the foster animals to stay in home environments as long as possible. The shelter is safe, the animals are well taken care of, but it's not a home.

My girlfriend and I went to adopt one dog named Mazy. Then we were informed that she was given up with another dog and their former owner went homeless. Neither of them were neutered. Less than 3-4 weeks later, the mother dog was pregnant. We did the math and she had to have got pregnant at the shelter, after a brief visit and talk with the vet when we went to get an ultrasound of Mazy. The management at Seal Beach Animal Shelter is terrible. It’s only composed of old ladies who honestly don’t know what they’re doing. During the whole process they were overly questioning and rude. They have no clear oversight of what’s going on. They even had the nerve to ask us for the puppies we birthed and had an attitude when we told them no way. Rude, unprofessional, and unknowledgeable. I would not recommend going here if it weren’t for the poor animals that still need a home

I only give the one star because the facility is good. However, the telephone personnel does a "quipped" interview with you and if it is determined that you would be a questionable candidate as an adopter, she cuts you off. I have previously adopted from Seal Beach Animal Shelter, but never, ever again. Not only was I pre-determined that I would not be fit for a 4 month old puppy because it MIGHT be alone for 3 hours once in a great while, the previous day when I tried to arrange an appointment to see the dog, no hour was suitable. I needed an appointment after 4:00 p.m. so my son could join me. I was informed over the phone that no appointments were taken after 3:00. I was confused because the hours on the website say the facility is open until 5. I questioned if, in fact, they close and 3 and perhaps the website was incorrect. The woman said they were open until 5 for paperwork and/or a pick-up. That should definitely be specified on their website. Regardless, I felt the woman in charge of the phones was rude and snobbish. I don't appreciate this attitude as I am a professional dog trainer, groomer and have owned at least 30 dogs in my lifetime. I adore my pets. I cook their food. I train all of them to be polite members of society. I travel with them, even overseas. They rarely are alone. If the situation arises that I have to leave a pet alone, I make arrangements, always. I am extremely responsible with my pets and am insulted that this woman felt she could pre-judge me. Though my last dog from this shelter was an absolute gem, and I loved doing business with them, THEN, I will not have anything to do with this shelter any longer, including donations. I am sorry that a dog I thought would fit in beautifully here will have another home, at some point, but I can assure you it will never be as accommodating as mine.
