The ambiance is good for a date. I sat at the bar. The service from the kitchen and the bartender was fast. I ordered an apple cinnamon margarita, corn, and shrimp tacos. The Mexican corn was delicious. I got it with light jalapeños. The shrimp tacos could have been better if there was a different sauce. The sauce it comes with is too spicy for me.

Update: lowering my review for the absolutely awful experience I witnessed on a recent visit. Three women, one with a tiny baby quietly sleeping in a stroller were turned away because of the baby. The host (and owner, I presume) coldly waved them out stating they don’t serve children under 13. It was 5 pm and the restaurant was dead. I then asked what that was all about and the host tried to say they let kids in before but it was a ‘zoo’ and ruined the dining experience. Tried to make analogy about not expecting kids in an R rated movie and said no one wants to hear a baby cry (though the baby was not crying).

The policy is whatever, but it is not stated anywhere as of 12/30/24. I checked the website, Google listing, etc. Instead, these three women were only notified at the door.

I will probably not be back after this. The food is amazing but the snobbery is so unattractive.

If I could give higher than five stars, I would. Maya could easily compete for top restaurant around Detroit.

The staff are lovely. And the atmosphere is modern, playful, and comfortable.

Maya Cocina should be on your go-to list for gourmet Mexican food. I appreciate that they keep their menu small so that all of their creations are exceptional. Everything from the alambres (skillet dishes), tacos and enchiladas, to the cocktails have the perfect blend of ingredients to create what I think of as little pieces of heaven on earth. The owner is often at the restaurant and always ensures his customers are taken care of. Even in his absence, service is impeccable, with the waitstaff being attentive, friendly yet professional, and ready to make recommendations based on your preferences. Also, they keep their space clean from top to bottom and front to back. Overall, the ambiance is intimate and welcoming, the food and drinks fantastic, the service some of the best I've ever experienced, and I can't recommend Maya Cocina enough.

Simply the best Mexican food in a 20 mile area. A stepped-up, elevated dining experience at a reasonable price. Service is great, atmosphere is excellent and not noisy. If you are looking for Mexican-owned restaurant, with superior food and presentation, and a nice environment you can hold a conversation in, this IS it. Excellent apps and cocktail offerings as well.

I been waiting to dine here. I had ordered carryout. The entree selected was Alambre de Asada (Angus prime short rib, grilled with onions, poblano peppers, bacon, and topped with Oaxaca cheese) with a side of tortillas. The menu price today was $23.89. The restaurant itself is chic and comfortable. The dish presentation and taste were outstanding! I will definitely return!

Great hidden gem, right next to Joe's produce. Food was awesome and was recommended by the host and it did not disappoint, we enjoyed it with guacamole and cocktails, they corn tortillas were the best I ever had. Definitely going back.
