I see some people complaining about the change over the years. While I do agree there will never be another chip quite like the original so many people used to love, I grew up eating Downeys, and they’re still my favorite to this day! BBQ is the best! But all the variations are very good.

I am what you might call a potato chip connoisseur. Especially kettle chips. I have tried them all! Personally I'm not a fan of the highly saturated thick chips, some of which you can chip a tooth on.

Downey's on the other hand is simply delicious... and consistent! Every chip is thin, crispy, buttery, salty, and pure heaven! I now eat half a bag a day as my one treat. Doctors might not be happy but it's my only indulgence and I enjoy every single bite.

Recently I had a small issue with a couple bags, and I wrong a rather strongly worded but honest email with my concerns. I heard back immediately with accountability, kindness, and what I like to call "down to earth, down home love". This is a small, family run business that actually cares! They sent me a replacement and then some. Not only that, but a lovely hand written note, and follow up emails. So genuinely compassionate! I've never had a better experience with any other company anywhere.

That was the cherry on top of a fabulous product. Y'all have some incredible people working over there, and please never change your personal, meaningful interactions with your customers. It's rare and immensely appreciated.

It actually really bothers me these big guys like Lays and Kettle are making so much money with their "satisfactory" products... Downey's deserves your dollars far more– trust me! They are just BETTER! Can't wait to dig into another bag in a couple hours! Love you guys!!!

Was greeted in Kroger St. Johns by one of your wonderful team members. She was helping me find some tortilla chips and I ended up with a bag of Original Sea salt potato chips. I'm a Michigan business and I love finding other legitimate companies with that personal touch. I too was a big fan of Great lakes chips.. but these are pretty darn good. Looks like u have a new customer. Love the Sea Salt. Thx for a great product

I purchased Downey's original kettle chips after the company switched from using partially hydrogenated oil in their cooking process.
I have kept a close eye on how companies, especially giant conglomerates, manage to alternate their recipes and manufacturing processes to phase out the use of this synthetic, cheap, and dangerous oil.
Although I was surprised it took Downey's as long as it did to change their cooking technique, I am aware this decision changes its entire product lineup, from shelf life and packaging, to the flavor, and taste, of a familiar customer favorite. Not to mention the the added cost of using a healthier, alternative cooking oil..
I commend the folks at Downey's for alternating their entire operations to comply with new FDA regulations regarding trans fats.. Being a small, family owned, Michigan business with limited resources, this couldn't have been an easy decision. Most small businesses wouldn't have bothered with such an expensive undertaking, and simply shut down. Thank you Downey's Potato Chips for saving jobs and continuing to contribute to the local economy.

Now, as far as the "New and Improved" chip.....
They are the best kettle chip I have ever tasted...
I have been a loyal 'Great Lakes Chips' original fan since they were introduced a decade ago. They make a great kettle chip.. They're also a small, family run Michigan company. But they have met their match with the new Downey's.

5 in spirit, used to be a genuinely unique and phenomenal bag of chips that as others reviews have pointed out is gone now. I understand FDA circumstances outside of their control required a change. Saw the 2nd new design and bought a bag. These aren't what they used to be still and understand the reasons why. If there's anyway to tinker around with a new frying oil blend I'd highly recommend it but understand that's not so simple and probably limited in options. Shame the new regulations ruined your unique original chip. That aside will still buy and support local business. Credit due for adapting and still moving forward.

Oh My GAWD! There are sooooo good! I'm addicted, they are the absolute best chips. I bought a bag of salt and vinegar chips and they are the absolute best potato chip! I just discovered these chips a week ago when I first went to Trent Wood Farms grocery store in Allen Park. The chips were gone in a day and I had to go back and get more, I got a bag of the sea salt...chef's kiss...I can't wait to try the other flavors. I would add a photo but the bag is empty. Thank you for making these chips.

I understand they had to change the recipe in 2018 but they need to put that on the bag. I drive to Michigan once a year and in 2019 I couldn't so in 2020 when I did i bought 12 bags as usual and come to find out they taste nothing like what they used too. I was so disappointed! They were literally the best potato chips in the world!!!

Like many others, Downey's USED to be my ultimately FAVORITE Chip.
I moved to Kentucky and would drive back to Michigan just for "My Chips" not any more!!
Since the change they're not even worth buying. I was extremely disappointed when I tried the "New" ones. Not only the taste but the texture is different!
Now.. just a Regular old chip like like all the others. You had a good Chip, in a class of its own.. Now they're just Blah!!
The UniqueNess is GONE!
And So Am I!!!
