Now, here is a Cannonburg gem. Tiny little party store with a nicely sized diner that whips up some delicious meals. It's also close to beautiful Townsend Park. Bring your bicycles.

I hate to post this, but I feel I have no choice. The customer service I experienced from the Grist Mill this past week has been extremely disappointing. To clarify, I’m not reviewing the quality of food or the service provided by the employees working behind the counters, answering phones, or assisting customers in person. This review focuses on the staff handling online orders and resolving mistakes, and it seems management.

On Sunday, 12/22, I ordered a prime rib roast and sides for my family’s Christmas dinner, totaling about $222. The earliest pickup time available was 4:00 PM on 12/24 (Christmas Eve). I submitted my order online, received a confirmation email, and assumed everything was fine. Since later pickup times were available for the same day, and because the store offers grocery items and functions as a gas station, I believed they would remain open in the early evening on Christmas Eve. Why should I have questioned that? I should also mention I placed this online order after spending an additional $90 in the store.

When I arrived at the store a little after 4:00 PM on 12/24, I found it closed. I immediately called and left a voicemail with my name, phone number, and order number. After waiting for a while, I realized no one would respond.

On 12/26, I waited for an email or call, assuming the store knew about my uncollected order. When I heard nothing, I called around 1:00 PM. I explained the situation to a staff member, who apologized and assured me I would receive a refund. He promised to notify the butcher and said I should hear back soon. I received no response that day.

On 12/27, I waited again and heard nothing. At 2:40 PM, I called and spoke to the same person as the day before. He told me the person responsible for refunds was doing accounting work and would call me back “immediately.” I waited again, and still, nothing happened. I called back at 3:15 PM and learned that the staff member had passed on the message, but no one could take further action. Frustrated, I explained I didn’t need another callback—I just wanted my refund. I expressed my concern that no one might handle this over the weekend, but the staff could only offer apologies. Still, no one processed my refund or contacted me.

This morning, 12/28, I called again at 10:40 AM. I spoke to someone new, who told me the office person wasn’t in (again). This staff member acknowledged they were aware of the issue, and the butcher knew about it, but they couldn’t process my refund either. They promised to keep me updated if they saw anyone from the office who could help.

As a customer with years of retail experience, I understand mistakes happen. However, I also know how easy it is to deliver good service with attention to detail, accountability, and communication. The store could have informed me on 12/23 if my order wouldn’t be ready or allowed me to pick it up earlier. They could have reached out on 12/24 to notify me of their closure. Most importantly, they should have contacted me first thing on 12/26, apologized, and provided a clear timeline for my refund. Any acknowledgment or proactive communication would have prevented me from writing this.

As a longtime customer and supporter of the Grist Mill, I write this reluctantly. I’ve had great experiences with their frontline employees, and I hate that this reflects poorly on them too. However, the staff handling this situation could have done much more to retain a loyal customer. While I may eventually return, it won’t be anytime soon, and I won’t recommend the Grist Mill—or Cannonsburg Village businesses—to anyone in the meantime.

The store on the side of the restaurant it's filled with homemade/fresh cut selections. Had the big cannon breakfast with pumpkin pancakes and holiday bacon. Tried the corn beef hash will definitely be coming back for the food, now the reason it's 3 star is cause the service the young server was running drinks food and refills like it was second nature. Too bad we had the older server, rude from the start was more focused on eating food drinking from the fountain or texting by the door. The young server helped us more than our own server. And if the young server wasn't helping us then the older server was going outside instead of checking on her tables. First time coming here, the food is why I'll return I'll definitely request a different server.

Wonderful breakfasts. Prices are reasonable. Scrambles, pancakes and meats. They smoke their own meats. We've been customers for about 20 years.

Great little hidden spot! Workers are so nice and welcoming. First come first serve bar incase you don’t wanna wait to get a table, the food is cooked right in front of you, the french toast is amazing. They make the bread themselves it’s truly great, they have a butchery inside where you can buy the food you just ate and cook it at home, I reccomend the holiday bacon!!! The gas station next door is great to, it’s not like any other big city chain gas station, they sell their own milk products, have their own prices, and have souvenirs! And they still sell products that normal gas stations would have. It’s everything you could want. It’s a refreshing change from what you’d normally see in urban living.

This is a great kick back to the old school gas stations that had it all! Fresh meat available to take home, delicious smoked meat with plenty of seats to dine in. Wings, sandwiches, BBQ pulled pork, chicken thighs sandwich, breakfast is served in house as well!
