Northern Natural Cider House & Winery - Kaleva, Michigan

This is a delayed review but I was visiting the area the weekend of August 8th. My daughter and I decided to ride around and check out the local spots, this winery came highly reviewed.

We went inside and I enjoyed a Riesling and she enjoyed a kids cider. While chatting, the bartender Kimber and I discovered we grew up in the same part of Detroit. It’s not often I meet anyone from the old neighborhood and she was awesome!

She was super cool to my daughter, we talked sports, school, girl power amongst other things. She encouraged her to keep being a smart and tough girl!

In a little tiny town north of Manistee, there is a unique small winery and cider. They offer tastings of their cider, wine and beer. I was a such a big fan of their Hibiscus Rose Cider, I took some to go! There were 2 food trucks onsite offering a variety of pizza, burgers, tacos, brisket and more but I did not have anything this trip. The ‘bartender’ was by herself for some reason and I observed a huge group of people (they were not together) come in right after I did….and she handled the crowd professionally and efficiently.

I hope to stop in here again when they have their live music event!

A not so new hidden gem. I’ve been going up to Kaleva for 22 years and just discovered Northern Natural Cider this past Memorial Day weekend. I ordered a flight and the cider I tasted was really good. The Northern Gold and the Blueberry waffle are top notch. They have food trucks available. We did order lunch and our food was delicious. There is a very large outdoor area to sit and enjoy your drinks. We chose to sit inside at the bar. Service was excellent. This place was very very busy and there was only one girl there doing everything. I wish I could remember her name. This was on Sunday 5/26. She was like Superwoman. The only thing I wasn’t crazy about were the chairs at the bar. I also fell backwards twice and they are very uncomfortable to sit on and at. I will be going back next time I’m in Kaleva.

If you are in the area, I 100% suggest you stop in. Heck, even make this place THE destination! We enjoyed our visit here... The atmosphere was welcoming. The other patrons were super friendly. The wines and ciders were excellent. I hear the food was good too, but we didn't get to try it... Next time!

It sounds like they do live music in the summer as well. Would've liked to stay for it, but we were just passing through to another destination.

Really nice place! Super friendly bartender and super yummy ciders! Four stars because we planned to get lunch there but their taco truck wasn't open (12:30pm on a July Saturday) and they were out of gluten free pizza crusts. This made it impossible for us to have lunch due to food allergies. We did try the beverage flight and buy the amazing Cherry Wine and Northern Star cider! Please be sure you have GF options for those who need it. We left hungry and had to find lunch elsewhere.

We had a great experience at Northern Natural today! I got a cider flight and my sister got a wine flight! Everything was delicious! We particularly loved the lavender cider. I got a four pack to bring home! Highly recommend!!

Northern Natural is an amazing small business. Our bartender; Carri was awesome. She was well versed in her knowledge of the ciders' and wine selection. She had a great knack, for helping you select your drinks from a previous one.
The prices were even better. Everything was competitively priced, including their howler and growler containers. So, that you can take your favorite cider home with you
Different days of the week include live musicians and a "open" mic night.
Lest I forget, they also have a food truck parked onsite, they serve locally grown, fresh ingredients.
They also offer, outdoor seating to take-in and enjoy the evening weather. This also includes yard game of corn hole boards.

Overall place was super cute and had a great atmosphere. Although the environment seemed nice the service was not as great. I am a server/bartender myself and have been for several years. When we walked in we were not greeted, no smiles or hellos at all. We sat down and waited a long time to even get talked to or a menu (there was only 2 other people in there). The cherry wine is 10/10, we even took a bottle home with us. After we sat and got our flight we ended up playing a round of disc golf which was one of the main reasons for coming and the course was nice and unique. I would say it is definitely worth a visit just maybe not so much if you are looking for a personable experience. 🙂
